On Saturday 21 September, the 2019/20 fellows were officially welcomed to Ireland at their Orientation Day. The event was held at the Herbert Park Hotel, with 121 of this year’s 122 fellowship awardees from seventeen different countries in attendance. The day opened with a presentation by Ms. Sarah Lennon, Executive Director of the Irish Council for International Students (ICOS). Mr Brendan Farrell, from the Development Cooperation and Africa Division at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, then welcomed the fellows to Ireland on behalf of the Irish government. A message of welcome was also played from Minister of State for the Diaspora and International Development, Mr. Ciarán Cannon, T.D.
The Fellowship Orientation Day was a chance for the new fellows to prepare for their studies and to ask advice from those familiar with the Irish university system. Dr Pádraig Wims, from the School of Agriculture and Food Science at UCD, addressed the fellows on becoming student in Ireland and answered the many pressing questions on the grading system and sitting exams.
Five 2018/2019 fellows who are in the process of completing their studies were also present at the event. Luong Tieu Khanh (Vietnam) delivered a presentation on Living in Ireland, Mary Njeri Maina (Kenya) spoke on Studying in Ireland and Cezar Qumsieh (Palestine) told us the 10 things he wishes he had known before beginning his fellowship. Later, Nguyen Thi Hoa (Vietnam) and Tran Thi Van Anh (Vietnam) joined the group to facilitate workshops on the topics.
The day ended with a Welcome Reception for all attendees before everyone went their separate ways again, dispersing throughout Ireland to the 19 different higher level institutions that are hosting fellowship awardees this year. We wish all the 2019/20 fellows the best for the year ahead in their studies, and we hope that they enjoy their experience in Ireland!
